Muscle Energy Technique
Muscle energy technique is a system of evaluation and treatment that was developed originally by Fred Mitchell, Sr, DO, then further advanced by Fred Mitchell, Jr, DO. The first classes were taught at the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in the 1970s, and continue to be taught there today.
The system is based on a biomechanical examination of the spine and extremities. Treatment involves precise positioning of the patient's body followed by a gentle muscle effort by the patient. Some of the benefits of this approach are that it is highly effective, gentle, and safe to use on practically anybody whether he or she is old or young, very stiff or very loose (hypermobile), or has strong bones or osteoporosis.
